Tahuata is has only 600 inhabitants, spread over 3 villages. The most attractive is Hapatoni, which has (by Marquesan standards) a sheltered anchorage and a good dinghy dock. As everywhere in these islands, the locals are friendly, and offer meals at home, which we profited from. |

The water is very warm for snorkeling, and there are shoals of fish, but water clarity is not as good as the Gambiers. |
![]() Viatahu is the largest village, and has the only store we found. |
When
walking up the road we asked a farmer about grapefruit, so he promptly
grabbed his pole and knocked as many as we could carry off the tree for us. |

We spent a few days in the
uninhabited Hanamoena Bay, snorkeling and preparing Milvina for laying up. The bay is popular with sailors, with a beautiful beach which is a challenge to land on. Usually we just swam ashore. When the work was done, we sailed the short hop to Hiva Oa boatyard to end the season and fly home. |
