From the almost uninhabited
island of Amenu, we sailed the 20 miles or so to Hao, which relatively
developed, with a pass through the fringing reef for medium sized ships, and
an airport with a runway long enough for the Concorde to land. It was developed by the French military in the 1960's as a base for their nuclear tests in the islands further South, most of which are still uninhabitable. The giant runway was to permit heavy transports to land which flew non-stop from France. General de Gaule also visited in his Concorde. Today the airport handles mostly turboprops, and has eschewed military procedures. |

There were sufficient paved roads
to enjoy our bikes, and a large graveyard with curious tomb ornaments. Neil had to fly to Tahiti for a scheduled intra-ocular injection, while André and Heather covered all the roads by bike. André flew home from Hao and Heather's brother Peter joined the crew. |
