Since France changed govenment
policy in the early 1980's and ceased trying to replace the original,
pre-European, culture, there has been a spectacular revival. One reasonfor the success is that the native Polynesians outnumber the people of foreign origin by about 5 to 1. This is in marked contrast to the Americas where indigenous populations are a small minority in most countries. |
