The research ornithologists estimate 400,000 of the birds, nesting in every hole big enough for them in the scree, but too small for a fox to get into.

auks are not very shy, and seemed quite happy to have us photograph them.When they fly, it is usually by the hundred, although the auks we see at sea are usually solitary.
