2014 Little Auks in Hornsund

There are colonies of little auks in the numerous scree slopes on the N side of Hornsund.

The research ornithologists estimate 400,000 of the birds, nesting in every hole big enough for them in the scree, but too small for a fox to get into.
The auks are about the size of a human fist.

The auks are not very shy, and seemed quite happy to have us photograph them.
When they fly, it is usually by the hundred, although the auks we see at sea are usually solitary.
These two individuals did not seem so pleased to see us, but did not move away
