Neil's 2009 included a mixture of
engineering consulting work, house fix-up, skiing and sailing. Some of the sailing was pretty lazy, as you can see here in the San Blas Islands, while some was in more robust and energetic conditions in the Irish Sea. Fortunately the worst weather encountered was rain and the odd squall, no serious storms. The family had a holiday in Canmore again, mostly skiing. Engineering consulting work
included some for an environmental advocacy group on Georgia, assessment of
problems in a BC paper mill and helping to plead a case before the
International Court of Justice in The Hague. This was an interesting
experience, and surprised my lawyer friends, since it very few courts let
anybody but a lawyer plead a case (=present final arguments). |

Being in the court is rather
impressive. The hot seat for Neil was at the lectern in the lower
right of the photo There were 17 judges hearing the case, and a dozen lawyers. Neil was the only engineer. It was very interesting, although somewhat stressful, working with the powerful legal team representing Uruguay. Several Americans, two Scots, one Italian and Uruguayans. Argentina sued Uruguay over a new pulp mill built on the Rio Uruguay, which is the frontier between the two countries. Judgement is expected spring 2010. MANY thousands of pages have been written on the issue, including the court proceedings and extensive scientific reports and lots of press coverage in South America. There are more details than you ever want to read at http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/index.php?p1=3&p2=1&case=135 |
